Intensive Care Unit in St. Thomas Hospital serves the patient with the most severe and life –threatening illness and injuries, which requires constant close monitoring. The patients are staffed by the doctors and critical care nurses who specialize in caring for seriously ill patients.

At St. Thomas Hospital there is a team of critical care specialists and Physicians to take care of the emergency need of patients. They work round the clock so that critical attention is always available for critically ill. In case of referrals the respective Specialists visits the patients at regular intervals to monitor them periodically to ensure improvement.

St. Thomas Hospital ICU is fully equipped with state of the art Biomedical instruments such as ventilators, pacemakers, defibrillators, dialysis equipment, equipment for the constant monitoring of bodily functions, feeding tubes, endo tracheal tubes, nasogastric tubes, suction pumps, drains, and catheters; and a wide array of drugs to treat the primary condition(s) of hospitalization. It is ensured that ICU is kept in fully sterile environment to prevent secondary infections.

Once a person is able to breathe unaided, they no longer need to be in intensive care and can be transferred to a different ward to continue their recovery.

The time it takes to recover varies greatly from person to person. It also depends on things such as age, level of health and fitness, as well as how severe the condition is.
